Kilsyth junior Ben Ursich has re-signed with the Cobras for the 2018 SEABL season, looking build on a promising third year campaign.

Joining Kilsyth mid-season after returning from Augusta University in Georgia, USA, Ursich quickly established himself as a vital part of the Cobras rotation. The lengthy wing averaged 8.3ppg on team best percentages from the field (52.9%) and three point line (39.1%), and had a knack for making big plays during crunch time on both ends of the floor. His confidence in the clutch was on full display with the VYC Men’s team, too, where Ursich helped lead the team to the 2017 state championship, his third title with the group over the past five years.

Cobras Head Coach Justin Schueller is pleased to have Ursich back for what will be his first full SEABL season and excited for what lies ahead for the young swingman.

“Ben returned midway through the year from college this past season, and due to injuries, was able to come in immediately and play a significant role for us,” Schueller said.

“In that time he showed how valuable a player he will be in the future for the club and it’s great to have him now as a full time SEABL player.”

While Ursich impressed with his efficient scoring in 2017, it was his work on the defensive end that turned him into one of the Cobras most valued assets. Ursich averaged over a steal per game in 2017, with his long wingspan and huge hands causing defensive chaos on the perimeter. With a strong defensive base and an expanding offensive game, Schueller believes Ursich has what it takes to get to the next level and eventually push for an opportunity in the NBL.

“Ben is a great two-way player,” Schueller said.

“With his versatility on the defensive end and ability to play off the bounce and make shots, he is a valuable asset to our squad. Our goal for Ben is to help him achieve his goal of making it to the NBL, and with his growth through this next season, we expect him to be on his way to that.”
