The Cobra Men continued their strong start to the 2018 season with a resounding 90-71 win over Frankston in their Home Opener on Saturday night.

The Cobras led from wire-to-wire as they moved to 2-1 on the season, riding impressive performances from all nine players in uniform. The Cobras season-high 90 point performance saw them post five double-digit scorers, led by import Isaac Turners’s game-high 21 points.

“It was pleasing to have contributions from all guys in the group and we continued to build on how we play together, which is pleasing to see,” Cobras coach Justin Schueller said.

“Dane’s (Pineau) double-double and Issac’s point production were standouts for us, but Owen Odigie and Sam Daly also contributed across the board and we didn’t have any passengers.”

Pineau continued his big start to the season on the glass as he recorded 13 rebounds to go along with 12 points, Daly’s relentless attack at the basket saw him finish with 11 points and four steals, Chris Patton added 13 point and six rebounds, and Felix von Hofe was again productive off the bench as he chipped-in with 14 points. Though he scored just five points, Odigie was a force on the defensive end, playing a large part in forcing the Blues into 23 giveaways, which resulted in 20 points off turnovers for the Cobras.

Leading by just three points after one period of play, the Cobras turned on the jets to start the second quarter as they reeled off a 9-0 run to build a double-digit lead they would never relinquish. Holding a 20 point lead for much of the second half, the only blemish on the Cobras performance was a sloppy finish which saw Frankston close to within 78-65 with two minutes remaining. After cruising late against Hobart in their season opener and seeing a fourth quarter lead slip away against NW Tasmania, Schueller is intent on fixing his team’s lacklustre finishes – starting this weekend when the Cobras play host to Melbourne.

“We need to continue to get better at closing games out and having four quarters of consistency – and that’s our focus moving forward and into our game against Melbourne,” Schueller added.

The Cobras take on the Tigers at 8pm on Saturday night in game two of a SEABL Doubleheader, with the Lady Cobras tipping-off the evening at 6pm against Melbourne.
