Cobras guard Alex Vanrenen will miss the remainder of the 2017 SEABL season after tearing his ACL earlier this week.

Vanrenen played a key role off the bench for the Cobras early in the season, and was expected to be called upon for increased minutes following the departure of Nelson Kirksey and unavailability of Owen Odigie (in China with Melbourne United). One of the Cobras grittiest, physical defenders, Vanrenen leaves Kilsyth down another man on the perimeter, but Head Coach Justin Schueller sees it as an opportunity for some of the team’s younger players to step up.

“It’s a great chance for some other guys to step up and enjoy some increased opportunities out there on the floor,” Schueller said.

“Our young guys in Josh Kunen and Jamie Ahale will also gain added experience so this is great chance for them, as both of these guys are a big part of the future of our club.”

While Vanrenen will not be able to help Kilsyth on the floor, Schueller still expects the veteran guard to continue being a big presence on the sidelines and in the locker room.

“The loss of Alex hurts us greatly; he has been a strong contributor for us and provided a lot of leadership,” Schueller said.

“But he will continue in his leadership roles with the group and do a great job contributing in that capacity now.”

The shorthanded Cobra Men hit the road to take on Ballarat this Sunday at 2pm.
