12-4 Boys East 1 Premiers

Season Wrap up from Head Coach Barry Spicer

After starting the season with a 19 point loss to Sandringham, we hit our straps and spent most of the season on top of the Under 12/East1 ladder, only to be dislodged in the penultimate round by Nunawading. Their top position gave them the week off in the first round of finals while we faced third placed Bulleen. After a closely faught out game, making the match winning basket with eight seconds remaining,  we came away with a win and a match up with Nunawading again in week two of the finals. With a season record of 0/2 and a draw against the Spectres, we unfortunately went down to them again by 4 points. Next we faced Sandringham for a place in the Grand Final and came away with a comfortable 15 point win to bring about a rematch with top of the table Nunawading.

The Spectres got off to their usual quick start and led us at half time 16 – 12. They then hit the first two points in the second half to lead by 6. Our boys then stepped up the defensive intensity causing a number of Nunawading turnovers and converting the baskets to take the lead with eight minutes to play.

In a scrappy final 3.30 mins the ball moved up and down the court many times but neither team managed to add to their score with the siren sounding and the Cobras victorious 23 – 22.

The boys put in a great team effort with all 10 contributing in some way to the victory by boxing out, playing some tough defence, making some great press breaking passes, rebounding and scoring. A great end to a long season with the sweet taste of victory.
