At approximately the halfway point of the season, SEABL undertook its annual player’s survey. Players were asked to give responses to 20 different questions, and the results have subsequently been calculated, with some fascinating insights from the playing group being unveiled. Among some of the categories, players revealed their picks for the Most Valuable Player award and the SEABL Championship.

Players were given three fields to answer each question, with the first answer receiving three votes, the second answer two votes, and the third answer one vote. 41 surveys were received from a total of 210 players, representing a 19.5% portion of the playing group.

As with any survey, there are limitations in making definitive analysis or in reaching conclusions. For instance, only one-fifth of the entire playing group was surveyed, and not every team chose to participate in the survey. Furthermore, the survey was undertaken at approximately the mid-point of the season, so opinions and judgements of the players may have shifted since they initially answered the questions.

However, the survey yielded the following results:

According to the players, the Knox Raiders are the Toughest Opponent to beat in the league and should also win the championship. The Raiders led the Dandenong Rangers in both categories, but by a clear margin.

For the second year in a row, Launceston was voted the Toughest Away Venue to play at, and when coupled with the game against Hobart, the Tasmania road trip was also voted the Toughest Away Trip in the competition, followed by Albury.

Perhaps because of their relocation to new State Basketball Centre, Knox has been voted as the nicest away venue to play at. Interestingly, the winner in that category last year, Geelong, fell to sixth this year.

Despite moving from Kilsyth to Knox, for the second year in a row Cheryl Chambers has been voted as the coach from another team you would most like to play for, ahead of Lukas Carey (Bendigo) and Larissa Anderson (Dandenong).

The two female Social Media Ambassadors, Deanna Smith and Hope Terdich, figure prominently in the Biggest Trash-Talker category, Smith finishing first, and Terdich third. Alice Kunek from Nunawading was voted the second biggest trash talker.

There were three players who clearly stood out in the Best-Three Point Shooter category. Renae Camino (20%), Kelly Wilson (15.5%) and Steph Cumming (12.5%) are considered to be the most dangerous from downtown, and for Cumming and Wilson, it is their second-straight year inside the top three in that category.

Perhaps the clearest winner in any category came in the Best Hands (i.e., steals & assists) category. Kilsyth’s Sarah Parsons chalked up a massive 43% of the votes, well ahead of Faith Probst in second with 9.4% and Jane Chalmers with 8.1%. Parsons also took out top honours in the best defender category with 23.4% of the vote – the second straight year she has won that category. Astoundingly, Parsons also claimed the Biggest Pest award with 19.2% of votes.

The Most Underrated Player was also closely fought out between two players, with Hayley Moffatt (13.7%) just edging out Oddette Andrew (10.5%), while the Most Versatile Player was clearly won by Renae Camino (22.3%) ahead of Mia Newley (11.5%) and Nat Taylor (10.1%). The Best Sportsmanship winner was Jane Chalmers of Bendigo on 15.6%, ahead of Myra Donkin on 11.1%. Donkin finished third in that category last year.

The Most Athletic Player was two-horse race between Chantella Perera (32%) and Renae Camino (30.9%). Those two players also finished first and second in that category last year, although in reverse order. Kilsyth’s Gemma Kerr was voted Best Sixth Man with 13.8% of votes ahead of Sarah Strange and Kristi Wallace (both 10%).

But holding her status for the second straight year as the Biggest Offensive Threat was reigning MVP and Knox superstar Amy Denson. Denson held 29.4% of the vote ahead of Camino on 17.6%. Denson also has been voted as the players tip for MVP for the second straight year, although her margin over second place is far less than it was in 2011. The Knox star took 21% of the votes ahead of Perera (17.5%), Camino (16.8%) and Hobart’s Lindsay Laur (14.0%).

Finally, the players rated the overall toughness of the competition as the best aspect of the league, and felt that the quality of officiating was the area that the league needed to improve in the most.
