After finishing the regular season atop the league standings with a 19-3 record, the AGL Cobras will host Sherbrooke on Saturday night in the first round of VYC finals. The top-seeded Cobras will face a Sherbrooke team that is red-hot of late, with the Suns currently on a nine-game win streak.

Kilsyth will carry their own five-game win streak into Saturday’s matchup after defeating Sandringham 75-65 on Sunday afternoon. The Cobras were again led by the duo of Kieran Murphy (23pts/10reb) and Adrian Tomada (21pts/7reb/4ast/3stl), while Regan Grimwood showed flashes of his early season form and Ben Ursich hauled in 10 rebounds.

Peter Godfrey’s team appears to have hit their stride come finals time, playing inspired basketball since suffering back-to-back losses in Round 13. The Suns were responsible for the first of Kilsyth’s two Round 13 losses, handing the Cobras their lone home loss of the season in a thrilling 65-64 win.

Sherbrooke’s resurgence has coincided with Michael Dow’s return from the United States, with the guard averaging 23.3ppg on 53.9% shooting during the streak to help push the Suns into postseason play. Sharpshooter Kirk Smith (17.4ppg/4.7rpg/4.2apg/2.4spg) has been just as good and is one of the league’s most dangerous shooters from deep.

Having defeated the VYC’s best in Kilsyth and Knox, Sherbrooke is now a legitimate championship contender. The Big V finals format does not reward top seeds with a second chance, so the Cobras will be playing elimination games from here on out. If the ‘grinders’ are to move forward with their season, they’ll need another outstanding defensive effort and contributions across the board from their deep roster.

Tip-off is scheduled for 7.00pm Saturday July 26.
