On Monday November 19th Kilsyth Basketball had the pleasure of inviting nine new dedicated Kilsyth Basketball representatives to join a small but elite group of people. This honor recognises their loyal service to the sport of Basketball, to the local Shire of Yarra Ranges community, to the service provision of events or programs conducted by Kilsyth Basketball and/or representing Kilsyth Basketball on the local, State, National and/or International sporting field or committees.

Kilsyth Basketball has the honour of announcing the new 2012 Kilsyth Basketball Life Members:

Sharon Arnold

Sharon is the current Kilsyth Basketball Technical Advisor, a role she has held since 1996. Taught to referee in Wangaratta by the legendary Rod Bush, Sharon arrived at Kilsyth Basketball in 1980.  Whilst maintaining commitments refereeing and advising at Kilsyth Basketball domestic games, Sharon has also refereed numerous notable events over her 180 WNBL games, including nine WNBL Grand Finals.

Sharon has also held the position of SEABL Referee’s Commissioner, has been a Referees Commissioner at numerous Australian Junior Championships, is a Life Member of the VBRA (2007), and a Life Member of the WNBL (2006)

Frank Bailey

Frank was the Kilsyth and Mountain District Basketball Association President from 1988 to 1995, and served as the Vice President in 1996 and 1997.  Whilst maintaining these commitments, Frank also held the positions of Senior Domestic Chairperson (1988 to 1992), After School Competition Chairperson (1982 to 1983 and 1996 to 2006) and sat on the Eastern Sports Development Ltd Board from 1982 to 1995.

In the period from 1982 and 1983, the After School Program was run entirely by Frank, who completed the referee’s roster, completed the fixtures and ladders and assisted with the coaching of teams. 

Robert Burns

Robert was the Kilsyth and Mountain District Basketball Association President in 1978 and 1979 and from 1983 to 1987, he also served as the Eastern Sports Development Board Chairman from 1983 to 1991.  Robert was instrumental in the Kilsyth Sports Centre getting a conversion from two courts to three. It is through this effort that Kilsyth Basketball has been able to grow, develop, continue to best meet the demands of its members, and be a successful community leader.

Laurie Hellier

Laurie has been involved with Kilsyth Basketball in numerous capacities for many years.  Starting in 1982 coaching his son’s junior Basin Wildcats Basketball Club, Laurie has coached Junior Cobras representative teams and was the Junior Boys Coaching Co-ordinator of the Cobras from 1989 to 1995.  Laurie was the Kilsyth and Mountain District Basketball Association President from 2004 until 2008, and has served as Treasurer of the Eastern Sports Development Board from February 2002 to the present day.

Daryl La Velle

Daryl is a founding member of the Mount Evelyn Meteors Basketball Club. He has seen the Club develop into one of the strongest in the Kilsyth Basketball Junior Domestic Competition, with 58 teams currently registered.  He is a past President of the Meteors and is still heavily involved as the Club’s administration as the Coaching Development Co-ordinator.

Daryl was awarded the ‘Volunteer of the Year Award’ at the 2011 Kilsyth Basketball Junior Domestic Awards function, in recognition for his service to Kilsyth Basketball which extend over 30 years.

Jackie Lee

Jackie has been an active domestic coach within the Kilsyth and Mountain District Basketball Association for more than 20 years. Her involvement with the St Edmunds Basketball Club (SEBC Saints) has been a major part of her life since 1986. Jackie has been a passionate and committed volunteer not only as a coach but as a coordinator, which has seen the SEBC Saints grow to over 720 players.  Jackie regularly coaches four to six teams per season depending on the number of coaches required.

Jackie’s role has also involved mentoring other young coaches and running a development program for new participants in the Chirnside Park and Lilydale areas.

Denis Liston

Dennis has been involved with the SCYC Scorpions Basketball Club for over 15 years.  Over this time he has coached various Scorpion teams within the Kilsyth Basketball Domestic Competitions from Miniball through to under 21’s.  He has been the President of the SCYC Scorpions for the past ten years and was recently a member of the Kilsyth Cobras Committee. 

In 2011 Denis was awarded the inaugural ‘Swinburne University Community Award’ at the Kilsyth Basketball Junior Domestic Awards function in recognition for his service to Kilsyth Basketball.

Graeme Taylor

Graeme was one of the first full time employees of a basketball stadium anywhere in Australia.  He was instrumental in the first days of Kilsyth Basketball to establish the foundations of what we have today.  Graeme set up the office, the systems and worked tirelessly with the Shire to seek a fair and reasonable deal for Kilsyth Basketball, and permit our independence in facility management.

Graeme served as the General Manager from 1974 to 1986, was the Senior Domestic Chairperson from 1974 to 1982, the Junior Domestic Chairperson 1974 to 1976, the After School Chairperson in 1974, the Ladies Daytime Chairperson in 1974, and the Referee’s President in 1974.

Graeme was also a Director of the SEABL where he ensured Kilsyth Basketball’s voice was heard loudly and proudly on the national arena.

Peter Withers

Peter has coached Cobras Junior Boys teams for over 20 years.  He has coached representatively since 1993 coaching Under 12, 14 and 16 Boys during this time.  He is the current under 16.1 coach of the Kilsyth Cobras Representative team.

Peter was the Kilsyth Cobras SEABL Men’s Manager for three years from 1998 to 2000, he represented Kilsyth on the Basketball Victoria State Team Coaching Selection Panel from 2000 to 2007 and was State Team Manager of the Under 16 Boys team in 1994.

Peter has also lead three Kilsyth Cobras junior team tours to the United States in 1999, 2003 and 2010.
