On Monday December 3rd Kilsyth Basketball participated in a Wheel Chair Basketball Challenge as part of the 2012 Disability Sport and Recreation Festival held by Disability Sport and Recreation (DSR).

This unique and interactive public event held at Federation Square, brings together the health and disability sector and the wider community to promote and celebrate physically active lifestyles through participation in accessible and inclusive sport and recreation initiatives.

Basketball games were played in a modified area with basketball rings standing at 1.6m tall. Community figure and wheelchair Basketballer Josh Allison was joined by Kilsyth Cobras Brad Bridgewater and Jordyn O’Shea to play for the DSR All Stars. They were joined by Melbourne Vixens netballers and teams from Camp Australia, Swimming Victoria, Gymnastics Victoria and the National Australia Bank.

Jordy and Brad struggled to adjust to being in the wheelchairs at first but soon got the hang of it. Josh was able to show off some of the skills he has developed since joining competitive wheelchair competitions and training with State squads.

Community Development Manager Haydn Smith described the event as “a great success”. “A fun day was had by all whilst raising awareness and promoting disability sports within the community.”
