Rookie Kyle Adnam has been named the SEABL men’s Player of the Week following a dominant performance against the Spartans in Brisbane on Saturday night.

Adnam exploded for career-highs of 35 points and eight assists, building on a recent stretch of impressive outings. Adnam did the bulk of his damage in the first half, tallying 20 points and five assists over the game’s first 20 minutes, while leading Kilsyth to an insurmountable 24-point halftime lead. Adnam shot a sizzling 15-22 from the field on a variety of jumpers, floaters, and acrobatic layups, while his constant penetration led to open baskets for the rest of the Cobras.

Adnam would snuff out any hopes of a Brisbane comeback in the final quarter, scoring nine points in a five-minute stretch to keep the Spartans at bay. It was the type of performance that has been brewing for some weeks now – Adnam enjoyed a breakout game against Geelong on the road with 13 points and 5 assists on May 3, and although not statistically impressive, it was the first time he truly seemed comfortable in a SEABL uniform. The following day against Albury-Wodonga, Adnam was even better, lighting up the Bandits with 27 points, 6 rebounds and 4 assists. Following a bye week, Adnam resumed his excellent play, scoring 18 points against NW Tasmania and their MVP candidate, BJ Jenkins.

After a disrupted start to the year (Adnam was finishing his rookie NBL season with the Adelaide 36ers) affected his early season play, things have come much easier for the 20 year old. Since his breakout game against Geelong, Adnam has been on a tear, averaging 26.7ppg on 60% shooting from the field. The Kilsyth junior and former Mt Evelyn Meteor has stepped up in the absence of import Dain Swetalla, giving the Cobras a new ‘Big-3’ by teaming with Joel Naburgs and Tim Lang (who had 31 points and 14 rebounds against Brisbane).

Adnam is the third Cobra award winner so far in the 2014 SEABL season, joining Lady Cobra Rosie Moult (Women’s Player of the Week, Round 4) and Sam Woosnam (Women’s Coach of the Month, April). Congratulations Kyle!
