Naburgs averaged 14.5ppg, 5.4rpg and 1.9apg in 2015, with his season cut short just 14 games in after sustaining a serious knee injury.

“After sitting out the back end of last season, I am extremely excited and anxious to get started with the new year,” Naburgs said.

“As of late, my attention has been focused solely on getting my body right; my knee has recovered well and everything seems headed in the right direction.”

Cobras Head Coach Rod Popp is thrilled to have his shooting guard back and expects a big return for Naburgs in 2016. If his current off-season form is anything to judge by, Popp believes Naburgs should return to his high-flying ways and re-establish himself as one of SEABL’s top all-around players.

“I’m really pleased with his progress this offseason; his fitness looks great and he’s starting to get his bounce back,” Popp said.

“We plan on him being a key for us this season as he gets back to playing like the old Joel, which is as good as any local guard when healthy.”

Naburgs has in fact proven to be one of the league’s elite players when healthy. In 2014, his first full season since graduating from Stetson University, the Eastern Eagles junior was named to the All-SEABL team, boasting averages of 19.0ppg, 6.5rpg and 3.0apg. And though his numbers were down this past season, Naburgs is determined to get back to his 2014 form when he helped lead the Cobras to the South Conference championship game.

“Kilsyth is my home and has taken such great care of me over the years,” Naburgs said.

“I want to prove to them how appreciative I am by getting in the best shape possible and performing to the best of my ability.”

Popp echoed those sentiments and is proud of the growth he has seen from Naburgs since they started working together in 2008.

“He’s come through our junior and youth league programs, earned himself a college scholarship and had a tremendous amount of success both in the States and in SEABL, yet still remains grounded and does so much for our Association both on and off the court,” Popp added.

“He’s really what Kilsyth Basketball is all about.”

More player signings are expected to be announced over the next week.
