After a fantastic 2012 season, the Swinburne Kilsyth Lady Cobras are happy to announce the re-signing of key players Chantella Perera, Gemma Kerr, Sarah Parsons and Jordyn O’Shea. All four girls had fantastic 2012 seasons with Perera shinning like never before in SEABL, finishing 9th in MVP voting and making it to the All-Star team. Parsons was again instrumental, her all-round game fitting perfectly into the Swinburne Lady Cobras structure. She was second in the league for steals and assists, finished third in Defensive Player of the Year voting, and again took out the Golden Hands award.

Head coach Peter Gay said that he is “excited about the re-signing of Chantella, Gemma, Sarah and Jordy, as they provide core stability and a solid mix of experience to compliment the younger players. Jordy will be in her fourth year on the senior roster and we are expecting her to become an active play making point guard and on court leader”.

In response to her re-signing, Kerr said that she is “very excited to be able to play another season. I am still really enjoying my basketball, so I am thrilled to have been given this opportunity to go around again, especially with the group of girls I get to play with. We had a great last season together, and we are all very keen to take this season a step further”. Gay said that “Gemma’s skill set and experience allows her play in many roles, and it is great to have her coming back for another season, as she can provide drive off the bench or step into a starting position”.

Heading into her third season, Perera is enthusiastic about coming back to Kilsyth. When asked for her thoughts on the Association she stated that, “it is such a great club and community that I had no hesitation in knowing where I was going to play this upcoming season”. After a great start to last season, Chantella missed a fair chunk of basketball in the back end which was disappointing for her, said Gay. “But we are excited about getting her back for 2013 after her WNBL campaign with Bendigo. Chantella is a leader both on and off the court, and it’s good to have players like her, Sarah, Chantella and Gemma at the club”.

On Parsons re-signing, Gay said that “it was good to have Sarah returning as her experience and leadership is great around the club, not only with the younger players in the group but within our juniors program as well. Sarah’s a smart, tough and versatile competitor who leads by example”.

The re-signings of these four seasoned SEABL players gives the Swinburne Kilsyth Lady Cobras a fantastic base to work from for further success, and also provides stability for the future.

The Swinburne Kilsyth Lady Cobras officially commence their preseason in
mid-January 2013 for their season opener on 17 March 2013.
