The Swinburne Kilsyth Lady Cobra’s overcame a determined Bendigo Lady Braves on Saturday night to move into the third week of SEABL finals, 68-63.
The first quarter was action packed and high scoring with both teams having their fair share of opportunities, the Lady Braves managed to get the edge after getting into the bonus with under a minute left to take a three point lead at quarter time.
It wasn’t looking good for the Swinburne Lady Cobras in the second quarter as they struggled with their accuracy from the field to go into half time trailing by eight points. The half time break came at the right time for Kilsyth as they came out in the third quarter determined to ensure that they were the ones who got the win.
The Swinburne Lady Cobras managed to hold Bendigo scoreless for the final two minutes of the third while making their own baskets drop to enter the final change trailing by just one point.
With so much on the line for both teams in the final quarter the crowd was on the edge of their seats, Bendigo made all the running in the first five minutes of the quarter bringing the margin back out to eight points, however three point baskets to Chantella Perera and Gemma Kerr within a minute of each other brought the margin back to just two with four minutes left on the clock.
Abby Bishop squared up the game with 3 minutes 21 left on the clock, Bendigo managed to grab back the lead however it was short lived as Kilsyth was at their defence best for the final minutes of the game not allowing the Lady Braves to score again until there was just 17 seconds left on the clock, the Swinburne Lady Cobras running out five point victors.
Abby Bishop top scored with 24 points and 18 rebounds, Chantella Perera ( 20pts, 5rbds) and Hayley Moffatt (12pts, 4blk) also reached double figures.
The Swinburne Lady Cobras now face arch rivals the Knox Lady Raiders this Saturday night at Knox Basketball stadium to see who will reach the 2011 SEABL grand final against Dandenong on Saturday September 17.
