VICs sweep U20 & Ivor Burge AJC for second year running

Victorian basketball continues to be a dominant force at the U20 and Ivor Burge Australian Junior championship, with the VICs taking a a clean sweep of all competitions this year, as they did in 2011.

The U20 VIC Metro Men’s team sealed Gold with a 67-58 win over SA on Saturday.

SA were the stronger of the two sides in the first half, jumping the VICs in the first term to take a 21-13 lead at the first break. They extended their lead in the second term, stretching the lead to 10 points at the half.

But the points dried up for South Australia after half time, the SA side unable to score in the third, connecting on just 2 of 18 field goal attempts for five points, while Victoria were able to add 16 to take a one-point lead into the final quarter. Things improved for SA in the fourth, but VIC Metro had all the momentum and ran away with the nine point win.

For VIC Metro, Taylor Dyson top-scored with 19 points, Anthony Fisher finished with 14 points.

For South Australia, Majok Deng finished with 23 points and 8 rebounds. Codey Ellison added 13 points for the game.

In the Women’s match-up, VIC Metro ran away with a comfortable win of the team from South Australia 71-53 to claim Gold.

The SA side struggled offensively in the first half, putting together just 18 points over the two quarters, with the VICs piling on 35 points to take a commanding lead heading into the change rooms.

Although SA’s second half was much more productive, the VIC Metro line-up continued to extend, clinching the 18 point win and the top prize.

For VIC Metro, Carley Mijovic was dominant in the middle, finishing with 20 points for the contest, while Tessa Lavey and Samantha Donald both finished with 12 points.

For South Australia Samantha Talbot finished with 14 points, whileOlivia Thompson added 12 points.

The VIC Metro IB Men’s team clinched a big win over NSW Country running away with the victory 98-64.

For the VIC team, Australian Boomerangs player Nicholas Hum was the top scorer with 23 points to go with 8 rebounds and 4 steals. Michael Paterson added 17 points for the VICs.

For the NSW Country side, Keelan Crawford was best with 15 points, while Lee Towers added 13 points. 

A 40–17 second term was where the game was won, giving the VICs an unattainable lead.

In the IB Women’s competition, it was the VIC Metro side who accounted for NSW Metro in a low scoring affair, 39-30.

The VICs built a healthy lead in the first term, 15-7 which turned out to be enough in the low-scoring match.

NSW Metro were unable to put together a double-digit quarter, which in the end aided the VICs in securing victory.

For VIC Metro, Kaitlyn Papworth was best, finishing with 15 points, while for NSW Metro, Lisa Mackie also top-scored with 15 points.

Victoria put a beat down on ACT winning by a final score of 91-53. Although they were down 3 at the start of the second term Victoria put on a clinic in the second term winning 29-4. Victoria won in team fashion as four players scored at least 15 points led by Taylor Dyson with 19. Lucas Barker had a nice all-around day with 15 points, 6 rebounds, 5 assists, 3 blocks, and 3 steals. ACT’s Dylan Simpson was the only player to score in double digits with 11

VIC U20 Men def. SA U20 Men
Victoria defeated South Australia 55-43. Lucas Barker led the way for Victoria with 10 points. Anthony Fisher and Owen Odigie each had 8 points and 9 rebounds. For South Australia, Codey Ellison had 10 points and 7 rebounds, Lukass Blicavs had 9 points and 9 rebounds, and Majok Deng had 8 points and 8 rebounds. South Australia was held to shooting only 23.7% from the field.

 The VIC Metro U20 Men played today defeating NZ U20 Men 110-55.
