Last week saw the first game of the new Victorian Youth League Competition (formally D League). Both the Yarra Ranges Kia Cobra teams had a spectacular start to the season with each team winning their opening games.

In Round 1 the Kia Yarra Ranges Kia Lady Cobras kicked off the first game of the VYC season, dismantling the Geelong Supercats winning 69 – 32. Brittany Renton had an amazing game with 17 points and 12 rebounds, definitely one player to look out for this year. She was well supported by Breanna Mackenzie who had 14 points and 4 steals.

In a blockbuster show down that plenty were looking forward to, the Yarra Ranges Kia Cobras got over the top of the Melbourne Tigers by 10 points winning 64 – 54. The boys were tough to stop offensively while making everything difficult on Melbourne’s scoring end. Kyle Adnam and Arjen Smit worked well together with Smit scoring 17 points and grabbing 8 boards.

Yarra Ranges Kia Cobras Head Coach Rod Popp said of the game “It was great to start the new season out with a victory against a very good opponent. We still have a lot of work to do and we need to strive to improve with each game.”

In round 2 both our Yarra Ranges Kia Cobras will enjoy a home game advantage when the women take on Bendigo and the men Hawthorn. Come along and cheer on your teams at the Kilsyth Sports Centre of Sunday 17 March 2013. Ladies tip off is at 12.30pm with the mens game starting at 2.30pm. See you at the game!
