Justin Schueller has announced his decision to step down from the role of NBL1 Cobras Men’s Head Coach effective immediately.

Schueller served as the Cobra Men’s Head Coach from 2017 to 2019, leading Kilsyth to back-to-back postseason appearances in 2018 and 2019. He amassed a 38-26 regular season record over the past three years, with the Cobras advancing to the SEABL Preliminary Finals in 2018 and NBL1 Semi Finals in 2019. In addition to the Cobras impressive team success, Schueller was able to get the most out of his players as individuals, too,  highlighted by Isaac Turner earning a place on the All-SEABL team in 2018 and NBL1 All-Star team in 2019, while Owen Odigie was named the SEABL Defensive Player of the Year in 2018.

Schueller has decided to step down to pursue other opportunities, and focus on both the upcoming 2020 NBL season – serving as an Assistant Coach with Melbourne United – and his role as Head Coach of the Under 17 Australian team, which will compete at the 2020 U17 FIBA World Cup in Bulgaria. Schueller has served as an Assistant Coach for Melbourne United for the past two seasons, and he led the U17 Australian Men’s team to a seventh-place finish at the 2018 FIBA World Cup.

“On behalf of Kilsyth Basketball I would like to thank Justin for his valuable contribution to the club over the past three seasons,” Kilsyth Manager of Basketball Operations Mark Watkins said.

“He has grown as a Head Coach in the SEABL and NBL1 and brought his NBL experience to the Cobras style of play. Justin’s hard work and dedication to his team saw the them record top-four finishes in each of the past two seasons, and a number of NBL players come to the club to play for the Cobras.

“We wish Justin all the best in the next chapter of his basketball coaching career.”

The search for a new NBL1 Men’s Head Coach will commence shortly.
