Cobras VYC Men’s Head Coach Zach Moult has been the Big-V VYC Men’s Coach of the Year for 2023.

Moult was awarded the league’s top coaching honour after guiding the Cobras to a 16-6 regular season record, good for second in the overall league standings. After dropping their opening game of the season, the Cobras reeled off eight straight wins, with another five game streak late in the season wrapping up a top-two finish and a pair of home playoff games.

Having gone an impressive 10-1 at home in the regular season, the Cobras took advantage of home court come playoff time, recording an incredible 22 point comeback win over Frankston to advance to the Preliminary Finals, where they emphatically defeated Ringwood to advance to the VYC Championship Game. And though they fell short in the title game, the Cobras season as a whole can be looked at as a success, as they improved on last year’s semi final finish and ended 2023 with some impressive numbers.

For the season, Moult’s team was a statistical standout, boasting the league’s top ranked defence (1st in opponent points allowed, FG% and 3PT%), third ranked offence and best points differential in 2023. The Cobras two-way proficiency wasn’t driven by a select few, but rather by the entire roster; 11 players averaged double digit minutes in 2023, which saw Moult’s team also rank first in bench scoring.
